Coach Ferreri:
Chris Goodyear turned the meeting over to Coach Ferreri, who joined us to have
the opportunity to address the club about some matters of importance to him.
He also welcomed any general questions we had for him.
Coach began by thanking the club for all the work we do to support our boys;
he also expressed his appreciation for the successful Kick-Off Picnic.
He discussed with us the following:
Greg Gonsky is able to videotape the soccer games for us. He
already did the game against
He requested that we invite Suzanne Barba, Chris DelPriore, and the Stat
Girls, Jessica Cillo and Alyssa Andreorio, to the banquet. He
also specified some additional people he would want to invite to give out the
awards.
He would like to organize a charity fundraising idea where we raise money to
contribute to the “Kylie and Tanner” Scholarship Fund. He
mentioned the possibility of pledging an amount for each
goal scored during a specific time period of one or two weeks during the
season. Some of the boys are looking into ideas as well,
possibly something to benefit the community.
He wants to get the Pre-Season Packet onto the website for next year in order
to avoid the problem of the physical paperwork being completed on time.
Coach then shared with us his dreams for the future of our soccer program.
He would like to see the program strengthened by expanding interest
beyond the high school and into the community. One idea he
would like to pursue would be to organize a clinic for the boys to work with
town youth players. Because town recreation soccer games are played on
Saturdays and travel soccer games are played on Sundays, the challenge here is
to find a good time to do this. One suggestion was the Fall
Festival weekend because many people stay here in town and the regularly
scheduled soccer games are canceled on that day. Since this
is September 22nd this year and only a little over a week away,
this could be something to keep in mind for next year. We
need to look into the possibility of another time when this could work out.
Another of Coach’s dreams is to refurbish a field with lights and bleachers
where we could hold Saturday night soccer games (more night games for
fundraising purposes). He is looking for our input as to
whether this idea is feasible; where can we go with this? We
discussed the possibility of involving other teams who would be interested,
such as girls soccer, boys and girls lacrosse, possibly field hockey, other
teams who would also benefit from having such a field. The
idea of a turf field was discussed as well, in which case we would need the
involvement of the football team because of the huge expense; but the emphasis
was on a field with lights and bleachers. Some thoughts
were that maybe this is something we could do in phases, lights one year,
bleachers another. Maybe other coaches could address their
parents’ clubs to see if there is interest. This might be
feasible if we could share the cost with other clubs. We
thought the back field could be a good choice when dealing with town
ordinances regarding adjacent properties. Coach Ferreri
will talk to some of the other coaches to see where we can go with this.
Coach Ferreri was asked two questions: The first was his
take on captains’ practices to which he answered that they are not allowed
on school grounds, but his feeling is that nothing is stopping the boys from
getting together and playing and that maybe we can work on getting into a
summer league for next year. The second question concerned
off-season training to which he answered that other sports
should be played; the main thing is that the boys need to be active.
For those boys not playing other sports, there is the soccer work-out
program, which will start up in January. That is followed
by the summer weight training and conditioning. Coach
mentioned that this past summer’s training and conditioning made a big
difference in the pre-season workouts.
President’s Report:
Chris expressed his thanks to Connie Stoll, Nan Guarini, Cameron Esemplare,
Dorothy Palme, and Suzanne Goodyear for their work on the kick-off picnic.
He added that the cafeteria worker was impressed with the control and
order of our group (thanks to Connie!).
Our membership is at 92%.
Our e-mail lists have been updated.
The pasta party sign-up for every varsity game was successful. (The tradition
and purpose of pasta parties was discussed.)
The sub-sandwich program is up and running.
Treasurer’s Report:
The treasurer reported that the Kick-Off Picnic came in under budget by $100.;
the cost of the new uniforms came in under budget by $150.; we made $300. from
the Coach Ferreri soccer camp; and we made $315. on the raffle tickets at the
picnic.
It was stated that if all of the clothing in inventory is sold, we should make
about $1,400. on clothing which is the highest we’ve ever done.
We have about $6,000. in cash. The new uniforms have been
paid for. We should end up with no clothing in inventory.
Note: The following question was asked at the meeting:
“What happens with the money we raise in the parents’ club?”
The treasurer and some of the more seasoned parents pointed out some of
the areas where the money is spent, e.g., new uniforms (the largest expense
this year); defraying the cost of the banquet (the people we invite); the cost
of the kick-off picnic; sometimes the coaches have “wish lists”; the
school budgets continually get cut leaving less money for such things as
sports teams. The budget is set so that we always have
$3,000.; from there we build it up so that every few years we can buy new
uniforms.
Note: Attached and being included as part of these minutes
is the Treasurer’s Budget.
Committee Reports:
Clothing: Half of the orders from the kick-off
picnic have already been filled. The rest should be back by
the end of September; Pat Guarini will call the class representatives when he
gets them. Some clothing is still available; an e-mail went
out regarding this.
We need to get someone on board to take over the clothing. (Pat and Nan
Guarini have done this for the past seven or eight years!) This
process starts around April when we meet with the distributor to decide on
colors and logos; sample orders are placed in May so we have them by June; and
order forms go out in the summer mailing. Pat has offered
to help out whoever steps up. It would be a good idea for
someone who will be involved with the soccer program for at least a few years
to come to take this over. Sue DiSalvo will put this out to
the Freshman parents to see if anyone is interested in doing this.
Concession: We will have the concession stand for
our night game on Tuesday, September 18. Connie Stoll has
inventory left from the picnic, including drinks and paper products.
We can make a list of what is needed (candy, etc.) for a trip to
Sam’s Club.
Car Wash: The car wash will be held this coming
Sunday, September 16, from
Each grade level has a specific time slot as follows: Seniors
Banquet: The senior moms will get together to plan
and organize the tasks for the banquet. It was noted that
both the boys’ and the girls’ soccer banquets are on the same day at
around the same time this year. (This affects two or three
families.) We need to avoid this happening again next year.
Connie Stoll motioned to adjourn the meeting. Denise
Magnusen seconded the motion. The meeting was adjourned at
